THE TOURIST SEASON
OPENS TO-MORROW. The tourist season for the summer of 1917-18 will open to-inorrow (November 1). Most of the northern tourist resorts are prepared to do business throughout the entire year, but the winter imposes an iron hand on the mountain and lake resorts of the South Island, which consequently do not invite attention of the visitor. From November 1, however, they throw, open the door and give glad welcome to those who would eaplre the clouds in the exhilarating atmosphere of the Southern Alps. Already the booking of accommodation at tha Hermitage ie qniie good, and as it is very early yet, it is anticipated that the 6on«m is going to be a particularly livelyone. Those who intend visiting- the Hermitage on this side of Christmas should lose no time in securing accommodation ahead, if they wish to avoid disappointment. The trip to Lake Wakatipu ie also likely to bo as popular as ever to the city dweller, but the Government does not intend to open the Tβ AnauMilford track this year owing to tho heavy ooet and tha impossibility of making it pay under existing conditions. Owing partly to the presence of so many soldiers in Botorun, the plaoa has teen fairly well treated during the whole of the year, and already there are indications that a busy season, is in store. The Waitomo Cavee are also in the line for tourist attention. Indeed, people who were in the habit of leaving the Dominion for their holiday are being forced to eeek recreation and rest in our own resorts, and in many instances are amazed at the variety of our scenic resources.
