NOTES AND COMMENTS

PBT GIENCOE.I Final payments for the New Zealand Oup and Stewards' Handicap, and acceptances for the minor events to be run on the opening day of the G.J.O. meeting, oloso on Thursday neit.

There is expeoted to bo a big demand for the half-dozen English yearlings which the Waikanae studmaster, Mr. Igji Dun. oan, is offering at the Ohristchurch sales next month. Tho youngsters have got valuable weighMoT-age engagements, in which theifchave distinctly the best of tho weights, fof they get a 71b. aFowancc-ior being foaled north of the line, and if specially reserved for a race like the Palmereton North or Feilding Stakes, they would have a 101b. maiden allowance, while the best of tho others engaged would most likely have earned a 101b. penalty. This will make the imported horses meet anything of any merit on nea.rly 2st. better terms. The, majority of tho races in question are run over sis or seven furlongs, eo the English horses, who will bo just a few months under three yeari? old, appear to have all the' best of the figured.

Oommenting on the weight-for-aje performers at the Australian Jockoy Club's meeting, a SydDey writer had tho following remarks on two New Zealanders:—Sasanof'a trip to Sydney was not profitable, but ono effect of it may bs to enable him to sooro a win or two on his. return to the Dominion. Taking New Zealand form as % gniie, there was very little between Sasanof and The Toff In tho autumn, but theTe seems no doubt now as to the former being the better. Both aro on the small side, but Sasanof handles weight better than the other. Tho Toff is going-, to Melbourne' with others of Mr. G. L. Stead's team bnt unless he 13 nicely treated in some of the minor handicaps it may trouble him to do anything towards tho paymoflt of etponses. He scarcely eeeme up to weipht-for-age form, and I cannot seo that there is much hope for bim in the Melbourne Oup with 9st.

Following on his succbbs in the October Stakes at Remington this month, the imported horse LantUß came into the market for the Melbourne Oup, for which lie became a red-hot favourite a week later, after his win in the Caulfiold Stakes. The Bon of Llangibby is one of the best per. formers ever sent out to Australia to race. As a two-year-old he won two races; at three years he secured the >Sandown Park Foal Stakes, while last -year he annexed the Jockey Club Stake", besides finishing third in the Great Jubilee Handicap and seoond in the Jockey Club Cup.

A peculiar position arose at a meeting held this month at Menangle Park, near Sydney, owing to a strike of jockeys. For the first race there wore twenty-seven acceptors. But after the jockeys had weighed out they protested against such a laree field being allowed to run, and refused to ride, as the risk of accident was too preat. Tho stewards considered the objection, and decided to abandon tho race. For tho second race there wore twenty, four acceptors, and, as some of tho jockeys had indicatod that they would ride only in fields of twenty or less, there was some doubt as to whether that race would bo run. but eventually the jockeys agreed to ride and the meeting was proceeded with.

Latest reports mention that Biplane has gone on the right way since his arrival at Flemington. According to his trainer the New Zealander has not yet become used to his now surroundings at Flemington, however, and shies it every new object ho discovers. He is one of these animals who like to investigate oil strange objects, and unless he is allowed to do this on tho track he shies. Mason regrets that he is at somewhat of a disadvantage, owing to having no horse to work with Biplane. He was in similar difficulties in Sydney before he sold Immortcl, for tho latter was of no use to Biplane. Eiplane will probably have to no on without a mate, for no other trainer is likely io let his horse have a go at such a smasher ac this . .

Djorneborg. does not lack opportunities to gain distinction on the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, as he figures in the Mew Zealand Oup, Stewards/ Handicap, and Elccarton Welter. C. Emerson has been engaged to ride Lady Black in the Stewards' Handicap, and F. Grav will liave the mount ou Wrestler.

The EnsJish-bred Meetham has gone amißS, and is not to be persevered Iwitb. Ho -will be giren a, light season at the stud before being put into work again. Disdainful has been causing her trainer some anxiety during the past week, says an exchange, and the Stewards' Handle ip candidate may not be at her best for next month's meeting. Marc Antony has not been working to his trainer's satisfaction la,tely> and may

not be able to lulfll Ilia engagements at the O.J-0. meeting. Mr. Q. Jj. st«ad has presented Tim TJoolan to the golding's trainer, S. P. Carey. ' Tho English-bred Ijanius, who is a strong order for tho Melbourne Oup. has only started twice, in Australia, ■ and won on both occasions. Bhould ho and Biplane meet in the Linlithgow Stakes or C. 1), Fisher Plato, tho Now Zoalander Trill be thoroughly tried out. Tho Toff was withdrawn from tho Melbourne Oup on October 13. His trainer, B. O'Donnell, stated that Bonlform's son had r.ot fulfilled expectations in Australia, and had no chonco in the hig two-mile handicap under 9sfc. Owners and trninora are reminded that nominations for all handicap events (ineluding Trial Plate), at the Feilding Jockey CHub'B RprinK Meetine. olose with the secretary (Mr. E. Goodhehere!, at Peilding, at 8.30 o'clook on Ootobcr 31.
