SCENE OF BIG BATTLE
THE BAINSIZZA PLATEAU
The above map shows- the essential features of that section of the Au6troItaliau theatre in which the Italians have developed their main offensive, snd in which the enemy is now attempting a counter-stroke. From Gorizia northward the battle terrain is high mountain country (portion of the .Tuliau Alps). The Balnsizza Plateau, so-called, has been described as "a vast, terrible, rocky ground, with hills a thousand feet high and corresponding valleys." Between Gorizia and the sea is the rugged Carso Plateau, of lower general elevation, but otherwise similar in character to the Bainsizza Plateau. In their brilliantly successful offensive during the spring and summer months of the present vear the Italians mastered the Bainpizza'Plateau and the dominating height of Jfonte Santo, north-east of Gorizia, besides pushing forward east nf the latter placs and on the Carso. The line readied is indicated on. the map. The enemy is attempting, by an attack south of jol'ii''' o »>"' 0R tnc northern fkirts of Hie Ba.insizza Plateau, to turn the northern flank of tho line on which the Italians have developed their offensive.
