WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING

DESERT GOLD'S CHAMPION PLATE

PARAOA WINS PEARCE HANDICAP

Despite the wild weather there' was a pig crowd present at Trentham yesterday. A howling northerly blew all day, and just before the Champion Plate was run it gave way to a driving rain, rendering the conditions anything but pleasant. Desert Gold 6till retains the title of champion, and yesterday; though perhaps & trifle above herself—due to the want of a race—she stripped in great nick, and won her race'as she usually does, viz., from end to end.- In such weather and on dead going the time recorded—2min. 7 3-5 sec.—is extra good, and causes ' one to wonder what she would run if pushed. Her stable companion, Estland, filled second place, and was as muoh above the others as the i mare is above him; The failure of the race was Ohuoble, who was expected to show up. On her forjn here it is not much use sending her to Riccarton or EUerslie.

Speculation was spirited, and thtf totalisator staff handled £42,041105. for the day, making £76,899 for the meeting, as against £78,227 10s. last year. • was some delav in ringing up the totals in the Champion Plato, and those •who waited to Bee the final figures missed seeing the race. Some adverse comment was caused by the big amount which went on the favourite after the machine olosed. This was over four figures, vhich suggested that all the money had. not been, rung up as quickly as it was received. The six acoeptors for the Hack Steeplechase all to the post, and it was *6jy evident that the handicap was considered a- good one, for the whole of the runners were evenly backed. Portland Lady set a very fast pace. and. jumping well, she led the field. There whb pplendid jumping for twelve furlongs, but going out of the straight Torchy slipped on the flat, and fell. At the wicker fence Fashion Plate toppled over. At the back of the course the top-weight was .running second, and over the last half-mile he Tan to the leader and outstayed her in the Tun home, winning by several lengths. Ormesby was a long way back, and Black Heart was pulled off. In _ the Tararua Handicap the general opinion was that Impediment had too much weight, but. she proved herself a good filly by again taking charge at the barrier rise aud leading the whole way. •Thames tried to go with her, but was flo.ne with at the turn. Hero Johnny walker got through, but had np chance jnth the Demosthenes filly,, who won easily. Thoughtful wns clos'e up, and Thames and Hastie finished next. Arrowfield was * as good a favourite as. Johnny Walker, out the Fordell representative was forced to cover a lot of extra ground, and this Beat him. v Nottata failed-badly. For the Spring Trial Stakes Bonnie Maid was naturally a short-priced favourite after the good showing of Impediment, but «io fatted to gain a place. At the start Paddington Green gave some trouble, but he got away well, and after allowing Galore to lead into the straight the New 'Plymouth horse then took charge, and won easily. Sunny Climeß was third, and the-favourite next.

Paraoa was favourite in a good betting .race for the Pearce Handicap. The start was a good ono, but Hceltaj) and Mascot 'got squeezed ■ out.. At the seven furlongs Lady General was showing the way Jo Oold Boult, Croesus, .Ohortle, and Tressida. The positions were muoh the same down the back, but the field bunohed going past the five furlongs. At the halffflile Lady General still .lea, with Black Ada, Croesus, Bramhletyo, Gold Soult, 1 ressida, and Paraoa in. a bunch. Entering the straight the. last-mentioned horse ran up to Lady General and soon settled ner. He finished strongly and won nicely from Dnbble, who got a run on the Tence. Gold Soult was a nrok away, and then oame- Lady General, Devotion, and

Informal was the elect of backers in the .Tuvemle Handicap, for- which.- "he tooved very, 'smartly in the preliminary. At the start-he was interfered -with; and aid not be«n. with his -usual dash. When tney raced, to the two-furlong post Pontoon, was showing: the - -way to the favonnk with-80-Peno close up'. The leader Jew his own; rind won nicely, while Informal dnly. bent 80-Pecp by . a nose. •Risingham was fourth and the remainder .were strung.out.•Teka was the.only withdrawal from.th'e Champion "Plate. Tho bracketed pair, .Desert Gold and Estland; was the "hottest order of the-meeting, and-they-ran'first, second. -•>.* Both stribped well, and' Trainer F.-Davis declared they would fill the-places. Tho inare ; dashed to the. front at. the. barrier rise, and was not headed again. JTenelaus was in . second place as they raced into the straight but Jutland then caroo and beat him for the position of runner-up; finished ■well back. \

The field in the Rnahine Handicap • thinned. out considerably, ...and. got .weaker with it. .Sardonja was a four-figuro favourite, but at no stage, did ho-threaten' danger. Quinn : s Post was l 'early in.comTnand, but'in the straight Polynesian took charge, and won easily from Trickery. '"Bloomine and Ouinn's Post finished next.

Lingerie .scored in the concluding event after ».n interesting rice. Sbe was made B good favourite, and gave H.' Gray his fourth winning ride. At the barrier Kwc?t. Tip"srary got badlv left, and took no part in tho. race. Shiela hung out. badly, and any chance Comment had -was spoilt by her saddle coming back. "Walaatao finished well, and got second place well. clear of Birkonvale. DETAILS OF THE RACING SECOND HACK & HUNTERS' STEEPLE-" CHASE, of 300 sovs. Two miles and a half. I Messrs. V.- and E.
