THE WOOL VALUERS
A QUESTION IN THE HOUSE. A suspicion was expressed by a member ,of .the House yesterday that some mon of' military age are avoiding military 'service, and making a lot of money oiit of the wool business. .Mr. Brown asked the Prime Minister: —(1) If wool-brokers do the valuing, howis it til it some twenty-five men, most of whom are of military age, are retained and drawing from ,£IOOO to J. 3000 a year in expenses? (2) Is it a fact that certain wool-scourers are employed valuing wool and hides and drawing XSOO a year and expenses, and at, tho same time conducting largo scouring works, '.vhile otters equally competent are unable to oUain employment?
. I'ln Ki/nt Hon. W. F. Mnssey. (I'-imo Minister; replied: The valuers erjiJiyed by wool-brokers only value wool in .the in ten sis of growers. The Imperial Government has appointed other valuers with special 'Bradford experience to protect its interests. Some of the valuers appointed by the Imperial Government are of military age, but, oeiuj? citizens of tse United Kingdom and only temporarily resident in' New Zealand, are not registered as reservists. The Governoiert is not aware that any wool r scourer is employed mining wool and hides and receiving .CBOO per annum mid expe'JSM and at the some lime conducting large scouring works.
