MEETING OP THE COUNCIL
I'he Wellington Citv Council met; last evening. Councillor *W. H. P. Barber presided at the commencement of tl o meeting, but tho Mayor (Mr. J, P. Luke) attended later and took the chair. There were present also: Councillors W. T. .Ttildreth, ,1. Castle, \Y. J. ThompscV, C. B. Norwood. J. 0. Shorland, M. J''. Luekie, L. M'Keniic, A. B. Atkinson, W. 11. Bennett, and J. Godber. Leave of absenco was granted Councillors J. H. Fitzgerald and A. Vcitch.
The Property Committeo reported that they had given careful consideration to the request of tho residents of Nairn Street for the construction of a road .".t tho rear of their property adjoining the Town Belt and the committee recommended that the council agreo to a proposal whereby they will, upon receipt of the amount; of the estimated cost of tho road from tho owners of property concerned, form a road on tho Town Belt of a width of between twenty-six and thirty feet (including one footpath), the formation to give frontages to tho private property and tho whole road reservation of sixty-six feet to be on tho Town Belt.
Acton is to be taken by the City Solicitor in the case o£ a property-owner at Eiddiford Street reported for carrying- out drainage and building work contrary to the provisions of the by-laws. It was resolved that tho council should proceed with tho proclamation taking certain land at Upland Road' for street purposes, notwithstanding the objection of tho owner to tho proposal. The council declines; to contribute towards tho cost of constructing a wall to protect private property at Crawford Road, and will also deny liability for the damage alleged to have been caused by a slip of earth at such property. A public stand for motor buses plying for hire is to be established at Whitmore Street, and the buses coming on to or leaving tho stand will proceed via I"catherston Street. . Petitioners for improvements to Ajitico Street, Melrose, avo to be informed that their application will come up for consideration in January next, when other works, already authorised, are completed. Encroachers on the road reservation at The Crescent, Eoseneath, arc to be informed that the council expects on Kmil 1 next, to proceed with the widening of Crescent Road, and will require the cnoroaohments to be removed by that date. , ... The Outlying. Districts Committeo reported that they had received a letter from an owner of property fronting Albert Street, Island Bay (unformed), complaining.of the action of the faalvation Army authorities in erecting a fence and enclosing a portion of such street, so that access to his property was obstructed.' The committeo recommended that the complainant be informed thai, he had a perfect right to pass and repass over Albert Street, and that ho could call upon the Salvation Army authorities to towovo the encroaching An offer t>y Lieutenant-Colonel A. H. Young to act as honorary veterinary surgeon to the Zoo was accepted, andtho council'sxthanks arc to be forwarded to him.
