REMITS FOR CONFERENCE.' • Tlio Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute met last evening. Mr. A. Jl'Kenzie presided. Proposed remits for submission to tho annual conference of the institute wero considered. A. niotion by Mr. H. A. Parkinson as follows was lost"That quota marks, having served their purpose in the initiation of tho grading scheme, should be gradually eliminated from the scale.' ifr. A. N; Burns moved"That tha New Zealand Educational Institute should' endeavour to iropress_ upon tho general, public and the National Government the great of providing improved educational facilities, «';nd that the Government , bo urged, during 1918, to provide adequate funds for: (1) School buildings: (2) playgrounds; (3) n. sufficient Jiumber of inspectors to enable the work of advising and assisting te.ao.hers to be satisfactorily carried out; (4) medical inspection; (!i) free dental treatment for children of the public schools; (G) technical school buildings; (7) compulsory continuation classes; (8) conveyance of children to central schools; (9) increase in staffs." , . Mr. W. H. Foster seconded the motion, and said that the best means of getting at; tlia Government was by making the public see the position through the Press.. It was decided to forward the motion to the Dominion Conference. The following was lost on the casting vote of the) chairman: —"That the Education Act be so amended as'to empower teachers to elect representatives to all controlling educational bodies." , The following was agreed to:—"That in anv system of comnulsory education after the age of U years, it is important to emphasise training for good citizenship, as well as vocational training."
