SOME CITY WORKS

A TRIP ROUND. The Mayor and the members of the Outlying lJistricts Committee of the City Council took advantage of the fine weather yesterday to pay a visit to several 6pots of municipal interest in those parts of the rambling city of Wellington remote from the centre. As some of the members of the committee are new to ivhat is going forward, the party visited Brooklyn to take in (he configuration of the district through which, sooner or later, it is proposed to construct a road, possible for tramway purposes, which will ultimately serve Mornington and Vogeltoirn. 'This road has been planned for some years, but the cxact rou.te has never been definitely enough determined on for the council to undertake any acquisition, of land. It is unlikely that any work in connection with the formation of the road will be attempted until after the war. From Brooklyn the committee w-ere motored down the long, long trail that goes a-winding down Tlappy valley to the sea, and were surprised to see the settlement that is going on at the seaside end of the valley. From there the trail was followed to Island Bay. A.I Berhampore a deviation was made to inspect sonre work (hat is being done in order to obviate, the damage done i>y flooding. Mr. W. IT. Morton (the City En"ineer) lucidlv explained (he method bv which the locality was being relieved of floods, and all agreed that it was a very necessary work. On the way to town the improvements which have been made to the Basin Reserve and the adjacent streets were inspected, and there was a consensus of opinion that the om ; jnnllv much despieed "minor scheme had been, wonderfully worked out, and that the Basin Reserve only reniured a now nav ; Vnn and dressni* nn<l bath rooms (combined) to be as up to date a sports Ground as any m New Z»ab:id Uh. been n co»tlv work, perhaps, but fen will say that the money has not b°en well sn'ent on the best and most substantial of permanent improvements..
