A COMMON MISTAKE
ANOTHER INEFFICIENCY
True, there will be a lot of work for a Food Controller in this oountrv if ever one is appointed, and if when appointed ho takes the gloves right off. Few people realise . tho parasitical influences that attach themselves to the people's, food before it reaches that much-discussed identity, the consumer.
It becomes a habit for a lot of people to dam a the unfortunate grocer and retail distributor—simply because he is_ largely noticeable. Many Royal Commissions have been set lip for the purpose of enquiring into this charge, but the answer is the same—no case. Tho trouble lies with tho consumer himself. For instance, lio wants too' much attention. Ho refuses to call for his wares, aud the deliveries are made at a cost of 5 per cent. He doesn't liko paying cash, and this compels a further 2J per cent, to fall oh liu household.
He is a chronic victim to the nnichadvertiSed particle and pays handsomely for the privilege.
Now, a bulk tea at Is. Bd. lb. would he increased to about 2s. if done up in fancy tins or packages, and probably to 2s. Gd. per lb. if wrapped in somebody's registered package. It has to be dono to pay for the packet and the universal advertising.. Why not ask for a bulk tea at Is. Bd. lb. iu a brown paper bag? Messrs. U. D. Bennett, Ltd., of Lanibton Ouay and Willis Street; have arranged" for a bulk tea to run with their bulk butter, and the price has been fixed at Is. Bd. lb., supplied in an ordinary biwu paper bag. • It is as good as «ny, and bettor than a lot. sold at 2s. If we all studied this aspect of economies a little more there would bo loss need for cost of living deputations.
