ACTION IN PERTH UNFOLDS REMARKABLE SCHEME.
An extraordinary letter from defendant to plaintiff was read in the Supremo Court on September 28 during the hearing of a. case in which Mrs. Lovelle, divorced wifo of A. G. Russell, pearler, of Broome, sought the recovery from him of certain property and a pearl estimated to be worth .£SOOO. The letter, which was dated February 19, 1912, stated that the defendant hud arranged with ii young shell opener, formerly a clerk in the Union Bank, to steal half the pearls got by his employer's boat, and divido them with defendant. Russell was to negotiate the sale of the stolen, pearls through his wife in Melbourne. and she was to send the proceeds by draft in a fictitious name to Broome. So as to avoid suspicion, the shell opener was to send the stolen pearls to Russell i;> m parcel of handkerchiefs or socks. This shell opener, the letter said, was getting 3(1.?. a week, lie had been in Broome only u year, but lie owned a lugger costing t CBSO. Russell added that there was not the slightest chance of catching the shell opener. Everybody did it, and he cited the case of a man buying a stolen pearl from a Malay for Jjso and selling l't the next day for JMSO.
