POLICE PROSECUTIONS. At the Magistrate's Court, on Saturday Mr S. E. M/Carthy, S.M., dealt "with, a short lißt of -police prosecutions. For insobrietv -Anton Hestad was lined 203., in tho alternative "seven days' imprisonment.. . Mr. -O'Leary explained that.the. defendant was a shellshock subject, and should not tako liauor. Ho had some negotiations with tho Defenco ! Department, end received a sum* of money , which he thought was quite inadequate j Thie annoyed him, and he took more liquor than was good for him. W. Jackson appeared, ipleadea not guilty to the charge o$ being an incorrigible rogue in that ehe_ habitually consorted with reputed prostitutes. She also pleaded not guilty to the charge of being a *rogue and a vagabond in that she possessed insufficient lawful means of support. There were several previous convictions against her for various offcnces. Aftor hearing the evidence the Magistrate recorded a conviction, and sentenced her to a year's imprisonment, to be followed oy three years' reformative treatmeut. On the application of Inspector Marsack a remand for a week wa-s granted m the case ill which John M'Farland was charged that on July 13. 1917. ho did obtain goods valued at £3 195., and £1 Is. in money from William Dcntice, by means of ft valueless cheque; on December 23, 1916, did forgo tho namo of John M'Master at Carterton, to a chcque valued at £12 drawn oh the Bank 'of Australasia, at leather,ston. in favour of Kobcrt Clark, .and uttering the same to. Sidney Davis, with j intent to defraud; also on August 11, 1917. at Featherston, did forgo the name of 0. Mathews to a cheque for £6. drawn on tho Bank of Now Zealand, Greytown, in favour of John Forbes, and did utter the same to William Smith, with intent to defraud. '' CIYIL ACTION. A civil-action which had been, .previous: lr partly hoard, was again before tho Court. Tho suit wa3 brought- by Ellen Jane. Itcesby. for whom Mr. B ' rappeared, against Christopher Hobbs, represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson ing damages for breach of an agreement to allow her to .peacefully enjoy the tenancy of portion of a house.let .by tho defendant to. plaintiff for a period of two years. It was stated that acta of trespass on of the defendant forced the plaintiff into leavms tho premises. The ease was again adjourned.
