THE FOOD SUPPLIES OF BRITAIN
STRONG-APPEAL BY MR. LLOYD GEORGE A WORLD SHORTAGE London, October 11. Mr. Lloyd George, receiving a deputation of agricultural representatives, appealed to the farmers to increase enormously the food supplies. Ho did Jiot do st> because he was afraid of the submarines; ho could state definitely that the submarine menace was rapidly diminishing. But the world's stock of food was the smallest for years. The diminution of the French and Italian production of cereals had thrown France and Italy upon the markets of the world. Tho Prime Minister deprecated as un-. fair the current abuso of tho farmer, which was due to ignorance about the precariousness .of his business. He v.as convinced that the majority of the people were grateful to the farmers. Their achievement last spring had added 700,002 acres to tho area under cultivii-. lion in England alone. Be =sked the farmers now to improve upon that achievement. He added: "Wo do not want to go to tho American market to snatch food from the mouths of our Allies."—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter.
