THE TURF

MASTERTON MEETING

CUP WON Bl" MIDNIGHT STAB.

(By Telegrach-SDecial OorresnondenU Masterton, Ootober 11. The llasterton Spring Meeting opened in wet wcatiiEr, witli heavy going, inuc was a large attendance. The sura of £16,009 10s. was put through tlio totalisator. Heavy rain was fallins when tho field should have gone out for tho Hack Jlurdles, but as there were no signs ot acieaiauce tho nice was eventually run in tne downpour. Moulu. who had the W™"*? of W. Young, was a Rood favourite, but he could not act in tho mud, and at no stage of tho race was he prominent, me early running was made by Mama 1 ark and YariUa. with Colorado handy. Down the back the last-named went to the front and was not again headed. Oombuetion beat the remainder easily, and /ortlana Lady was third. Moulu,. Jem. and YariUa finished in that ordei- behind the placed horses. Mattock got into the first fence and was pulled up. Union Jaok was tailed 011 the whole way. . There was a big field in the Trial States, including several two-year-olds. The public sorted out the winner in one. This was the Fordell representative, Coolpan, who had shown a lot ot pace at Marton. He drew No. 2 at the barrier, and lie and Finmark jumped out clear of the others. With two-furlongs gone, the pair wero together, clear of Chimera aud Pao. with the others strung out. The favourite drew out in tho run homo and won comfort, ably, while Chimera beat Finuiark by a head. Matilda and Pao were the next to Interlude, Bairnsdale, and Petruchio were withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, leaving 16 runners. Merrio Poto was a good favourite, but he had bad luck at the barrier, as did Moutoa Quceu, and 'their chances were extinguished. Lady JJlack and Stareugo were the first to single themselves out, and they led into tho straight, where Gaziciue took charge, but Menelaus came fast from tho distance, and in a good finish won by a neck from the topweight. Kiltcss also finished last, and just missed second place. Orowhursi was close up fourth.. The I'ordell-trained Arrowfield came with a big reputation for the mile Hack Race, and he started a better favourite than The Golfer, who carried a lot of support because ho was ridden, by H. Gray. At the start the New Plymouth-owned Paddington Green led tho field, but at the halfmile Blackhill had his measure, and was first Into the straight. Ho was winning comfortably until the last bit, when the favourite rushed at him, and Blacklulls rider, A. Reed, had to exert himself to the utmost to win by a head. The little-fan-cied Elevate was third, and then came Paddington Green. Tho Golfer lost his rider soon after the start. A rank outsider in Midnight Star prevailed in the Cup, which was run at a grand pace throughout. Client, Orleans, and Trials mere evenly backed, nut none of them took part in the finish, though Client was only just beaten out of a place, ,ind his New Zealand Cup supporters can be well satisfied with his showing. At tho start Mascot made play, with Orleans and Trials at tho head of the others. The last-named got a bad passage down tho back, and was then rushed round on tho outside. Tho light-weight, Midnight Star, took charge at the bottom of tho straight, and, stalling off challenges by Client, Maniaroa, Teka, and U-votion, he won by three parts of a length irom Jlamaroa. Teka was close up, and then camo Client and Devotion together. , Another outsider in Robur scored in the Ruainahanga Hack Handicap, after a good finish with Golden March. Galore, who got chopped out at the barrier, finished fast in third place, and then came Rosiain. Tho winner has been a big disappointment in tho past, but like most of tho Eokeby stock she can handle herself in the mud. Tho Trcntham-trained Bairnsdalo came in for solid support in the Opaki Welter Handicap! He went out after Husliduyo, who acted as pacemaker, but thoy were just beaten, and Paraoa scored. 'n sood stylo from Undecided, who gave a glimpse of h ! s old form. The Trontham-tramed Johnny Walker and Probation woro next. The heavy going anchored tho top-weight (Bjorneborg). The winner gave nearly ae good a return as tho Cup winner at Otaki. The Maiden winner, Astrophel, ridden by Gray drew a position "next the rails in the Dash Hack Handicap. Ho jumped out smartly, and won from end to end. ■Ho is a, good sort, and acts well in heavy going. Birkenvalo beat. Comment for second place, and paid a, better price than the winner. RESULTS.
