LATE HON. J. D. ORMOND

When tho Legislative Council met yesterday afternoon Sir Francis Bell moved, "That this Council records its high of the distinguished services rendered to New Zealand by tho late Hon. J. D. Ormond, a member of the Legislative Council, a former member of the Hohbo of Representatives and a Minister of tho Crown, and respectfully tenders to the widow and family an assurance of sincere sympathy with them in their bereavement" He said that in public and private life Mr. Ormond had always won respect. He. had been a notable figure in the public life of New Zealand, and had died, as he had lived, possessing tho greatest reward that a public man could seek—tho respect and confidence of tho community. Tho Hon. W. D. H. Baillie eaid ho had first met the- Into' Mr. Ormond in 1861, and had known him for half a century as a legislator of KOira'd common sense. Mr. Ormond had helped to lay the foundations of government in tho provincial days, and he was regretted sincerely by a very wide circle. The Hon. 0: Samuel said it would bo said truly that for very many years the Hon. J. D. Ormond had been "a power behind tho throne." His influence had been felt by the Legislature right to tho end of his career. Hie placo in the field of sport would not easily be filled. His influence had been always for good. He bad never ceased liis efforts to elevate ■sport, and lip had earned always tho resnect: that his fellow-men had accorded him. The motion was carried, and the Council adjourned until 2.30 p.m. 16-day. THE FUNERAL. The funeral of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond, M.L.C., took placo at the Napior Cemetery on Tuesday morning. Tho cortege, which, left "Tintagel" shortly after 11 o'clock, was a lengthy one, and included representatives from most of tho local bodies throughout Hawke's Bay. Following the hearse were the deceased's three sons, Messrs. G., 3?., and J. Ormond, the Hon. Sir Francis Bell (representing the Ministry and the L«gislative Council), Sir James Carroll and Mr. G. Hunter, M.P.'s. An impressive service was conductod at tho graveside by the Rev. J. A. Asher. The Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. W. JF. Massey), in telegraphing his condolences, stated that he regretted to hear of tho death' of the Hon. Mr. Ormond. The Dominion, and Hawke'e Bay in particular, had lost one, ttho, in his day and generation, rendered distinguished service to his country. Sir Joseph Ward telegraphed expressing his sympathy, and was exceedr ingly sorry that owing to prior and important engagements which could not.be cancelled, he found it impossible to pay his last tribute to one who had done so much in the public life of the Dominion.
