NOTES FOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATION'S STUDY
Sir,—When Ibo polling for the loan for Iho now destructor was being agitated for some eight or ten years iiRO by the Mayor members of the City Council, and othois interested in its constrnctiou a great deal was said by letters in tho newspapers and otherwise as to flic destructor's usefulness. It was stated, ifI remember rightly, thnt machinery would bo imported, and that nil waste material collected or sent to the destructor would bo carefully sorted out and be made into useful material for manufacturing purposes, and also bring in & considerable revenue, for fur her information on the matter T can only refer those interested to speeches made by the Mayor, councillors, and other leading citizens fit the time of tho dotation for tho destructor. I do not know, iior have I heard, what action has been taken bv the council since then, but if carried out it would have been a great benefit for all tirtc, and especially since the war commenced, in not only providing material for munitions, but for the employment of very many of the unemployed 'and ofhons. Another item which I
think has never gained publicity was the arrangements re leasing portion'of Market Eesorve, now occupied by the Turkish Baths, to Mr. Gilniour. People have been crying out for a market place, but apparently they are likely to lose the utility of the reserve, especially laid out for that purposo. Cannot the Mayor or councillors give the public some information regarding these matters?—l am, etc., OBSERVER. October C, 1917.
