The Huia, which, sailed on Sunday afternoon for Wanganui and New Plymouth, returned to jiort early on Monday morning, as water was making its way through the place whero repairs had been elected on the previous day. It has now been decided to place the 6hip on tho Patent Slip for overhaul, and in the meantime the Baden Powell will replace the Huia in tho Wcllington-Wanganui and New Plymouth service. Yesterday morning the fcaden Powell arrived from Lyttelton, and discharged a general cargo. The Huia will so on the slip on Wcdnesaay and it, is expected that the Tepatrs will take a few days. A PIEMAKKIBLE EXPERIENCE. Particulars of the remarkable experience of the cutter Janet. Captain Stcnbeck, in a sea of pumice in the South Pacific were received recently. An extract from tho captain's log, dated Sunday, August 20, says- "Wind northerly, variable; sky overcast, all sail. Xt 3.30 a.m. the shijj ran 1 into a Sold of pumice, and nearly stopped. Putting a bucket over the side, it filled with stone and ashes, not a drop of water entering. There was a strong smell of sulphur and wet ashes. The wind freshening we got out, but kept on running into fields of more or less density. At day-

break the ship was lying grounded by pumice in all directions. There was no sign ol water anywhere lrom the crosstrees. Wo had been running through a heavy sea, on an E.S.E. course during the night, but hero everything was calm—just a slight heave of the bouldery surface lo show that wo really had the Eea, under us. There was a 5 to 7-knot breeze blowing from the north, but we barely moved, and at 6.30 the cutter stopped. After some manoeuvring wo got her turned round and through tho gut she had made for a mile and a half, a break in the field showing a narrow, nearly clear streak leading in a S.B.W. direction. We followed it for 11 miles, when clearer water was met, and at 8.30 a.m. we were able to steer S. by E. Tlio sea looked weird with its grey, solid-looking epvering. and from the cross-trees still no clear water was risiblo, but between S. and B.W. bearings I got an observation on the pumice horizon at 8.30 a.m., giving the position approximately at 17deg. 48min. S. and 175deg. lOmin. \Y. Sailing at the rate of seven knots an hour in a S. by E. direction, close to-the edge of the field, as if under a Iceshore, until 9.30 a.in. clear water showed on the other side of the field to tie eastward about four milcß away. Cargo for' Lyttelton and Dunedin will be received by tho Tarawera until 10.30 a.m. to-day. v The Kowhai will leave Lyttelton at- 5 p.m. to-day for Wellington'. Prom this port tho vessel will go to Napier and Auckland. Tho Hawera. and tlie Blenheim will bo brought off tho slip this morning, and the Kaltoa and Wakatu will take their jlace, for a day, for cleaning and painting. On Wednesday tho Huia will be taken for her annual overhaul, which will occupy several days. Tho Rcgulus is due on Friday from Wanganui, and will sail the same day for Nelson, Wesiport. and Greymouth. The Oalni will arrive this morning lrom Wanganui. She has 2000 crates of cheese to discharge here, and will sail this afternoon for Lyttelton. Oamaru, Dunedin, and Timaru. Tho sailins time of the Ngatoro for Greymouth has now been fixed for noon to-morrow. I Captain Thomas G. Thomsen has been appointed master on the Koutmnii. The Hinemoa will sail at 5.30 p.m. to- | day on her trip round tho northern lighthouses. Sho should be away about a | month. Tho Poherua left Timaru at 8 o'clock last night for Wellington, where she is due to-dar. To-morrow the vessel will sail for Westport ond Greymouth. taking cargo for those ports and Hokitika. The Hazel Iteptnn l»ft Lyttelton at 4.30 p.m. yesterday for Greymouth.
