Washington, October 7. The State Department has published a series of telegrams showing that Count Bernstorff asked Hcrr von Jagow (late German Foreign Minister) for 1,700,000 dollars (.£310,000) for' an unnamed man who had guaranteed such political action in one onomy country as would ensure peace. Von Jagow agreed to the Icrin, but only if the aot'iou in the direction of peace was really serious. Ho added that if the onemy country was Russia ho would drop tho project, as the sum wa3 too small to have a serious effect there. He would not consider it in regard to Italy either, because it would not be worth whilo to spend so much money thore.
