KARORI DEFEATED
A large crowd witnessed tho meeting of' Marist and Karori at Association Park oi) Saturday, afternoon, and were well rewarded for their attendance, for the exposition of football was a splendid one. Karori kicked off with wind .and sun in their faces, and Marist were quickly on the attack, mainly through the efforts of Spencer,' who sent in a splendid shot which was well turned by M'Farlaue, a corner resulting. The corner, however, was not improved on. Karori, by tho efforts of Manley, Lissington, and Smith, retaliated with a nice piece of combined play, which resulted in Smith sending in a shot that just missed its objective by inches. Back again they came, chielly through the instrumentality of Russell, who eent the leather on to Manley, he in turn sending to Wilkin, who sent in a hot 6hot wnich was splendidly staved off by Hickey. Play now remained in the centre of the field, where clever footwork was exhibited on both sides, Mason (Karori) particularly distinguishing himself. Kelly (Marist) made a nice opening at this stage, passing the ball cleverly to Spencer, who in turn sent on to V. Marshall, then to H. Marshall, who sent the bail nicely back to Spencer, Ihe latter putting in a high dropping shot, which MTarlane cleared, gaining the plaudits of the spectators. In a twinkling tho ball was transferred to Marists' goal area, whero Wilkin, gaining possession, sent in one of - the best shots of the day; but again Hickey proved eoual to what was required of him. With the ball in Marists' twenty-lives, the whistle sounded for half-timo, neither side having scored. On resuming it was clearly seen that both sides were out to do their utmost, for the game waged up and down the field at a very fast pace. Mooney and M'Eiligott (Marist) were seen to great, advantage on the loft wing, and the exhibition they gave was a real treat. Crane (Jvarori) made a nice opening for his forwards, and at the right moment passed to flalloy, who drew the opposing half-backs nicely and ■ then passed to Lissington, who, beating his liiau cleverly, passed on to Manley, who sent m a nippy shot whioh. was cleared by the goal-keeper. Karori at this stage were attacking strongly, and were awarded two corners in rapid succession, tut were nnable to score. Marist took a hand at attacking, and a nice bout ol combined play was witnessed, which resulted in a goal kick. Still on the attack, they narrowly missed on two occasions, one of the shots sent in by Moonev deserving a better fate than a mere goaJ kick. Excitement was running high amongst the « I PP"™ rs ,£' each team, first on© 6id& and then til other were on the verge of scoring. A fine spectacular piece of play on the pan of Marist now ensoed. Kelly gamed possession in mid-field, and sniarUy passed to V. Marshall who Resell out of . position and then sent on to Mooney, then to M'Eiligott, who tran - ferrod to H. Marshall, who, » mld -. fc great applause, scored a magnificent goal. It was a lovely piece of combined plaj, and richly deserved the applause that followed.
