AUSTRALIAN JAM
.OFFER TO GREAT BE-ITAIX. It has been announced by the Prime Minister (Mr. Hughes) that he bos offered the British Government 50,000,0001b. of jam and 200,000 cases of canned fruits at tie same prices as last season's shipments, and about 8,500,0001b. of evaporated apples at 7d. per lb. The British Government had accepted part of that offer, and thus the situation would be somewhat relieved. During January, February and March next the British Government will take 12,000,0001b. of : jam at ss. 3d. per dozen lb., the price at which last season's consignments were sold. This quantity would cover mainland and 'Casmanian offers, and would be distributed among firms who forwarded sunnlies last year. He had made further representations to the Imperial authorities, urging them to accept tho remainder of Iris offer. Mr. Hughes added thut considerable quantities of jam would be required for army Tations for tho United States Army, and in the event of tho British Government .being unable, to accept tlie whole of his offer of jaras. canned fruits, and dried apples, ho had asked the Imperial authorities to offra- to tho Governmont of the United States the balance of the jam, viz., M,000,0001b. on the same terms ftf were made to the British Government. Another important arrangement madn by (ho Prime Minister was to make available to jam manufacturer?, who would utilise it. in making jam for export, a'quantity of sugar to be sold in bond at £2i per ton.
