A LIEGE HORROR

The German authorities at Liege tried and sentenced to death within three days an influential Liege merchant named Groneret, his wife, and two daughters, aged twenty and fourteen, on an unproven charge of espionage. The father and mother were both shot. The two daughters were forced to attend the execution. After the parents were shot the officer told the girls that they might save their lives if they revealed the names of the parents' accomplices. The girls refused, the eldest saying: "If we speak we might cause fifty people to he killed. We would rather die alone," The eldest girl was immediately 6liot by the samo squad, and fell over the corpses of her parents. The youngest girl, to whom similar promises of free pardon were made if she would only betray her friends, was then tortured, outraged, and finally shot also. This quadruple murder has produced profound indignation throughout the province of Liege.
