APPRENTICESHIP
BRITISH SCHEME FOE -TRAINING BOYS FOB BUILDING TRADES. An important scheme of apprenticeship in the building trades has been adopted by representative London masters and men at ■ a conference convened by the London (Central) Advisory Committee for Juvenile Employment at the Ministry of Labour. —It .provides for an indentured apprenticeship of 5 to 6 years for l , boys who nre to become masons, bricklayer?, carpenters, joiners, plasterers, an<J painters. Two years spent at a dny technical school on the lines of tho Brixton School of Building ■will count as apprenticeship, and a boy , entering the trade from such a. school will be reckoned a third years' apprentice. The employer ..undertakes that'the boy shall have every opportunity to learn the practical,side of the bade, and that during the first tiro years' ho shall spend a minimum of six school hours per week, out of his working lime, at the continuation school. -During the third and fourth years apprentices must attend technical classes on two evenings a week. . * Wages are fixed at 6s. Gd., 10s., Ms., 17s. 6d., 265., 345. Gd., for the successive years of apprenticeship. The scheme is to lie worked by a Building Trades Apprenticeship '■ Committee, representing masters, men, the education authority, and the Advisory Committee. It is l.oned that this scheme, devised in the-first instance for London, will be applied to the provinces.
