MASTERTON NOTES
Twenty-five births, eleven deaths, and seven marriages were registered in Masterton during the, month oi September. At the annual meeting of the Masterton Permanent Investment and Building Society, Messrs. J. C. Bpddineton and B G Eton were re-elected'directors. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, stated that the profits of the society, which had been established for forty years, had never dropped below / per cent., -excepting on two occasions. Local money was still offering freely for investment on mortgage on town properties. • The total loans for 1917 amounted to i£53,185, compared with in the P TuUdinf permits to the value of £4478 were issued by the Masterton Borough Council during the month of September. A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association and Wairarapa Caledonian Society waited upon the Claims Board of the Wairarapa Patriotic Association on Monday, -and strongly urged that the right of service grant of .£5 be reinstated.' The chairman stated that the matter was one for the executive ot the association, an 3 not the Claims Board, to deal with. .... ~, The framed painting, in oils, of the late Mr.- George Heron, a former Mayor, is to be banded over to the Borough Council on Wednesday afternoon. The Mauriceville Lime Kiln Company hopes shortly to be turning out seventy or eighty tons of lime per day.
