HARD ON THE HORSES
.. A BAD PIECE OF ROAD. : Sir,—Will you kindly, givo mo a small space in-your valuable paper to call attention to a case of Hie most diabolical cruelty. I refer to the state of the road to Glonbervio Dorrace, off Tinakori Poad. It is one of the worst *pots in Wellington, representing in 6ome places a rise of one in three or four. It is covered with a mass of loose, stones, with not a bit of gravel or anything to bind them, and over this the'poor horses have to draw heavy loads, often trying again and again until they are exhausted. I well remember seeing a two-horse team vainly trying - to get up there, and although the driver did his best'(and I never saw a team better handled) the poor horses had to give up from sheer exhaustion, .and the same thing has been going on for months. The loose stones are continually rolling down to the road and the footpath, to be carted away with the'road sweepings—another waste of public money. If they N had used some of the many hundreds of slabs taken from the footpaths, which are ruthlessly smashed up and sent away to the "tip or the granite "setts" that are lying about in different places, and made a good solid 1 wheel track and a good joad in the centre with a covering of blue rock over it, they would have done some, thing sensible. As it is it is simply a disgraco to Wellington. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc.. ■ . OBSERVER.
