PETONE BOROUGH
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
TIIO Mayot (Mr. J. W. JlTlwan) presided over, the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council held last evening, and there were present Councillors S. Newlands, W. Cox, J. Foster, ' C.' E. Brocklebank, D. M'Kenzie, J. M'Dougall, E. Tovey, and I?. H. Jones. A letter was from tho Department of- Internal Affairs intimating that the "Minister had confirmed tho council's heavy traffic by-laws. It was decided to accept an ,offer from the Wellington Automobile Club to provide' notice boards to bo erected in the vicinity of the public, school, ■'. Potone, warning motorists to beware of children. A letter of thanks was ordered to bo sent to the club for the consideration shown for the children. ( A claim was received from v Neil Doneghue for the storage of bus bodies belonging, io tho council. Mr. Doneghne was the contractor for the building of; the bodies, for the council. It was impossible to get delivery' of tho chassis l'or tho' bodies, consequently two of them were in the builders' hands for nearly two years. The claim was for ,£9B, and on the council being informed that, a clean receipt had- been ■ obtained from Mr. Doneghne 110 action was taken. Tho District Manager of clie Public Trust Office wrote suggesting that the council should take over Ihe control of tho private streets and make them public streets. The streets referred to are those near the railway station, smd are named Te Pnni, Nevis, Armidale, Lockie, and Ryan Streets. .Councillor^M'Kenzie contended that tho council should give the matter serious consideration. The buildings facing 'the streets named could' bo made to look well if the streets were put in decent order. . The Mayor stated that tho matter had been before the council for a considerable time. The owners of the land know their obligations under the Act, and if they desired to be released from' those obligations tho council ■ would want a quid pro quo. It was surprising that the Public Trustee, who was making the application, had notified-the tenants that their rents were to be increased. Councillor Tovey stated that lie and other councillors had measured the width of ,the streets, and only one of them was iftft. wide. Te Puni Street was only 20ft. wido at one point, and thero was ample roo(ji to widen it. After sonie further discussion it was decided to ask the owners of the land to submit,a scheme of improvements •in order that the council might consider the suggestion of taking ovor the streets in question.
