THE OPENING CEREMONY

About 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon it rained very heavily, but the downpour was of short duration. Nevertheless it probably interfered to soiue extent with the attendance at the opening- of the Academy of Fine Arts. Punctually at 3 p.m. Ei Excellency the. eral arrived and was received by All. U. if Gore, president of the academy, and ot M°i: inviting His Excellency to lopen the exhibition, stated that they weie «1 grateful to have the «°V"' nor ; G , e o ne f r h a ] present, knowing how great must be the calls on him just now wider the b bess nf war As to the Woio said the council considered that it was quite up to the standard and nrevious yeai-s, and was a great cieait to those concerned. Many oMhe ,students of two and three years nad gone to the war, and-lady artists hadi responded very- well indeed. The modelling work Ws extremely good, and reflected great credit on Mr- Ellis, of the Teohnicai School, who had every reason to bo proud of the work of Ins students. Mi. He urged the artists of New- Zealand to give more attention to tho native scenery, the beautiful woodlands, iuver, and' Alpine scenes. When he went to an academy he wanted to 6ee nictures of New Zealand; something that Ee could take back with him. He did not care a rap for old masters ho wanted New Zealand scenery, lhey ought to do their best in every w;ay possible, whether, in oils or water-colours, and so help to bring the beauties ot New Zealand scenery before the peoples of the other parts of the Empire, and m that they would be doing a great service. He apologised , for, the absence of the Countess of Liverpool, who had a prior en--8 then declared the exhibition open. -
