PARCELS POST
INCREASE IN THE. KATES.
The Postmaster-General announces tho following alterations in the rates of. postago on inland packets and parcels, to lake effect from October 15:-Inland packets (comprising commercial papers, books, and printed papers, pattern and sample packet's and unregistered magazines), 6d. for each 2oz. or fraction .thereof lip to lib., and 2d. for each additional lib: up to 51b. Inland parcels, M. for the first lb., and 2d. for each additional lb. up to Gib.,, and Id. for each additional lib. up to 281b. On payment of a special fee of M.-an inland parcel will be mariced "Fragile and forwarded to destination in a hamper, otherwise it will be forwarded to destination in a mail bag. In addition to the postage rates mentioned above a }d. (war tax) must be added to the postage on each inland packet or parcel. With to the foregoing rates _it may be explained that the rates on inland packets have been simplified, and a concession has' been given m respect of commercial papers up to 2oz. in weight. The postage on packets above 12oz. in weight has been slightly increased. It has also been necessary to somewhat increase the postage rates on parcels up to 121b: in weigh.t as the cost ot handling has absorbed more than the postage'collected for some years past. It is estimated that even, when the new rates are operative tho parcel post scheme will be barely self-supporting. A special rate on "Fragile".varcels has become necessary owing to the heavy expenses-incurred by the Department m the safe convevance of such parcels. lor instance, in the case of light weight bulky parcels the cost of convavance far exceeds the postage affixed thereto.
