HUTT HIGH SCHOOL

TO REPLACE SECONDARY DEPARTMENTS. T'ho subject of .tlio establishment in tho Hutt Valley of a Central High School, which would displace llio whole of the secondary departments of the District High Schools, came befoi'O llio Education Board yesterday iu tho form of the following letter (dated August 30) from the Education Department:— "The question of establishing a High School for tho Hntt Valley to replace tho £ resent secondary departments of the istrict High Schools at Petono and Lower Hutt, and to provide for tho pupils at present travelling by train to Wellington College and Technical College, was considered at the recent meeting of the Council of Education, when the following resolution was passed: 'That as soon as opportunity offers the two District High Schools at Petone and Lower Hult should bo disestablished and a High School established for the Hutt Valley, provision being made in the scheme of control for suitable courses of a vocational character.' As, however, the cost of site, buildirfgs, and equipment will be so large as to be prohibitive at the present, lime, it has been decided to postpone further consideration of the question for the present. In the meantime the two District High Schools are to be allowed to continue." On the above subject Mr. E. P. llishworth urged the board to lose no time in acquiring a site. On. the .-.round of economy he thought this should be done, as the value of land in the Hutt Valley had increased very rapidly indeed during the last five years. Particularly was that the case between the Lower Hutt and the sea. What should bo done-was to secure a Week of about ten acres in a central position. He moved that tho matter be brought before the Minister when the deputation from the board waited upon him that afternoon. This was agreed to without discussion.
