Mr. R. Hannah, of Boulcolt Street, has received a letter from his son. Lieutenant R. W. Hannah, of the Royal Field Artillery, from "somewhere in Prance" that ho has been promoted to the rank of captain with the recommendation to a rank of major on tho first vacancy.

Private Neil Thompson, No. 26,208, killed in action, was the second eon of Mr. Peter Thompson, ono of 'the pioneer settlers of tho Mauricevillo nnd Bketnhuna districts. Private Thompson was born and lived most'of the time in-the Bketahuna district. Ho managed several croameries at different times for • the Dairy Union, and wns also on tho staff of tho Fresh Food and Ice Company in Wellington for some years. He enlisted in tho 17th Reinforcements, Rifle Brigade, and was in several engagements in France. *Jle was in the Messines Battle and came through without a scratch. He was of a very cheerful disposition, and will bo much missed by a laTgo circle of friends.

Resignations from the following teachers were accepted by the Education Board yesterday-Miss G. S. Cork, assistant, •Waikanae; Miss Best, Jlaia; and Mrs. M. G. Sutton, Lansdowne. ■

An old resident of New PlymouthMr. William Humphries—died this week at the age of 72 years. He arrived in New Plymouth with his parents in the ship Sir Edward , Paget in 1651. MrHumphries saved, through the. Maori war as a volunteer, and afterwards was in business with the firm of' Messrs. B. L. Humphries and Co. as general merchants, subsequently being a partner in the firm of Messrs. S. L. Humphries and Co., wino and epirit merchants. Ho is survived by a- widow and family of three daughters and three sons, one of whom, Sergeant A. L. Humphries (formerly a noted New Zealand Rugby representative), is at present in camp.
