PEACE HYPOCRITES
ITALIAN COMMENT ON TEUTONS' REPLY TO THE POPE "OBSEQUIOUS CHARLATANS" , Rome, September 34. Ihe newspapers are unanimous in regarding the replies of the Central Empires to the Papal Peace Note as a grotesque patchSvork of reticence and subterfuge. They describe the authors as obsequious charlatans, who, while repeatedly kissing the Papal 6lipper, are really "pu.lling the Pope's leg. —Aus - N.Z. Cablo Assn. SMOOTH-FACED DECEIT. (Eec. September 25, 7.45 p.m.) Rome, September 25. Turkey's and Bulgaria's replies to the Pope's Peace Note are similar in form and substance to the Austrian and German replies. Vatican advices state that the replies of the Central P ; owers only partially correspond to the' summaries sent to tho Pope beforehand, notably in regard to the sections dealing .with territorial problems, which were apparently deleted before publication, under military pressure. A Milan paper says that the Pope will shortly inquire verbally of Berlin for replies to his ■ proposals relating to Poland, Relgnim, and 'Alsace-Lorraine.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
