OTAKI MEETING SIEICHT-OF-HAND WINS MEMORIAL STAKES. COALITION'S STEEPLECHASE. The Otaki Maori Kacing Club's meeting, ■held yesterday, attracted a, very satisfactory attendance, and au interesting day's racing resulted. Tho course was on the heavy side. Astronhel, Matilda, and Glue- Gown were evenly backed in the Maiden Handicap, for wihich there -were twelve starters. Tho Held gave very little trouble, and after a good start Matilda and Astrophel were tho quiokest to find their feet. The pair led into the straight, but Matilda, was under' sufTrance* und could not get to Astrophel, who won well. Beaufort beat Quinn's Post for second juoney, and gavo supporters a very big. return.. Matilda, Sir William, and Pa,panui were the Jiext to finish. As was expected. lady 3?eaufort, who had the services uf 11. Gray, was favourite in the mile Hack Handicap. She was closely followed in public estimation by Polynesian, and after a, great linish tho pair filled the places, while Hnstie was only a. head away and in aline with Arihia. At the .start the favourite jumped out bmartly, and led rouud the turn. Hero she was steadied, and Arihia and Mastic led down tho back from the two lavuurites. At the half-inilo Gray gave his mount a spell, hut entering the straight the ran round on the outside and challenged the leaders. In a, great finish, in which Gray showed that he had not forgotten how to ride, the favourite won as described. After the race Gray got a good reception from the crowd.

The steeplechase .provided the best contest of the kind ever seen on this course. Several of the runners were well backed, and though there were several bungles all the horses got round safely. At the start Pawerewere and Arlington led at a fast pace, but at tho double the lat.ter vas steadied. Later on I'a/wcreworo was nearly over, but H'Sweeney n.ade a wonderful recovory, a fdat enuallod by A. Jl'Donald at the next fence. Entering the final halfmile Union Jack was in charge, but at the lasU fence Coalition joined him, aDd beat him in the run home. Go-ekwar was a poor third, and the remainder finished , at intervals. ■ Heavy wagering was indulged in on several of the runners in the Memorial Stakes. O.rlcans was the actual favourite, but was closely challenged by Sleignt-of-Hand. At tho start Black Ada and Hose Pink led Mascot and Goldstieavn. Down the back the positions were unchanged, but Lady Louisa, SJeight-of-Hand, and Orleans moved o.n. Entering tho straight Black Ada foil back, and Rose Pink led at the distance. In the run to the post Sleight-of-Hand was challenged by Lady Louisa, but the National winner hold his own and won easily. Orleans was close up third, and then came Mascot, who ran in from the stick in the straight. Lady Louisa, Orloa-ne, and Undecided all got bad passages over tfie Inst lalf-mile. Only five horses started in the Stewards' Hack Handicap. Goldbuaring and Perrier were the public fauoies, but a surprise was in store, for after; Trickery and Folyr head lfad led the other trio into the straight, Bloomine then came through and won very easily from Ferrier. Trickery was third, and Golducarini; uext. A Rood class field contested tho Flyinu Handicap, which jirpviul a good thins for the favourite, Jferrie Poto. At tho start, Sweet Tipperary got ofF the best, and followed by Glenroy, Merrio Poto. and Menolaus, she led down the back. Trentham Eoso ran to the lead with two furlongs to go, hut she slopped entering the straight. At thin -point Merrio Polo took charge. and he van in a comfortable winner. Bairnsdale. who came from a long way back, followed by Orowhurst and Kiltess. Another favourite in the- Trentharatrained Thoughtful prevailed in the "concluding event. The chestnut gelding .and JTnstlo were tho only o.'jes backed with any spirit. Soon after tho start. Thoughtful pulled to the front, nnd led into the straight from Ra-rtoline and .Hastie.
