LAWN TENNIS

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Wellington Lam Tennis Association says: "As foreshadowed in the Inst annual report, the past season has been an exceedingly quiet one, most of the cluba contenting themselves with arranging matches on their own courts. Following the policy laid down by the committee some time ago, no provincial championship tournament was played. Thr committee, however, endeavoured to hold a metropolitan championship and handicap tournament during the Christmas holidays, the proceeds lo be donated to a patriotic fund, but owing to lack of support from players the project was abandoned. For a similar reason no inter-club matches were arranged by the association. As far as can be judged the same conditions will probably obtain during the next season, and an opportunity will be given delegates at the annual meeting to express their views as to whether any tournaments or interclub matches should be arranged for the incoming season. From the accompanying statements .of accounts it will bo seen that the finances of the association are in a sound condition, although the expenditure for'the year has been slightly in excess of the income. "From a financial standpoint the association has been marking time and the committee has endeavoured during the past year to cut down expenses to a minimum. The levy fund account now stands at £273 Is. Gd., which forms a substantial nucleus of any amount which may be needed to acquire a ground of our own whenever a suitable opportunity offers. ■

"During the post season club secretaries liave in many instances omitted to furnish the association with amended lists of members, and their clilbs have been called, upon to pay a larger levy than should actually have been the case. In such circumstances the oommittee has met such clubs by writing off an amount representing the difference in the amount payable on the actual membership for the season and that shown in the original return. 'In order to save unnecessary trouble it believes secretaries to see that the association is supplied at the beginning of the season with an accurate list of membership. The association has continued its policy of affording as much assistance as possible to the Wellington Public Schools Lawn Tennis Association with a view to encouraging tennis among school'children. At the' Vast annual meeting 'the rules of the association .were altered to admit" of affiliation by school associations, and the Wellington Public Schools Lawn Tennis Association has now become affiliated. This latter association held a successful tournament for school children during the past season, and your association donated JGS ss. to cover the cost of the prizes, given. The Schools' Association is a. very active body, and is doing excellent work among the children, and deserves all the support and encouragement. which can be given to it,"
