RED CROSS WORK
» _4 ■— . • FOR AVOUNDED NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS.- ' As a rumour has been current in Wel- \ lington and district that the hospital goods dispatched by the St. John Ambulance Brfgad* Red Ci-oss Society are, on ► arrival in London, distributed amongst other than New Zealand soldiers, hospitals, etc, tho committee decided to'get ' into touch immediately with Lord Kan : fuiiy Director of tho Ambulance ve- , partment of the Order of St. John, Lon- ' don. A cablegram was accordingly sent , a few days ago to His Lordship, and . his reply positively states that all 1 monevs received are sp'ent under Ins own ", personal supervision on New Zealanders , only. Lord Ranfnrly also cables that on arrival of hospital goods and equipment in London the New Zealand hospitals are first of all notified as to I what articles are available, and anything ' which is not required by them is then . sent to the Brigade Hospital, Staples, - France (where there are always some ' New Zealanders), and other hospitals. His Lordship gives an assurance that ! there is absolutely no wasto. It is interesting to know that hospital , goods and equipment ,to the value of - 113,265 (wholesale cost) have, since May, . 1915, been dispatched for the benefit and > comfort of New Zealand spldieTS at tho front and in England. The number of • bales sent away totals 546 and cases 723. These figures give some idea of the great work, lull voluntarily done, which is . being performed at, tho Star Boating Club's Building, Jervois Quay, by the • ladies of the society, headed by Me,dames Peat and Preston. This re suit. , could not have been accomplished had it not been for the support and assists . -ance, financial and otherwise, accorded , to tho parent body by its country branches, numbering some forty, and shops, ' whose praiseworthy eflorts deserve the highest recognition. ■ , In "addition to the goods sent, over ,£IOO3 has been cabled to tho t?t. John Ambulance Headquarters, London, : through the Under-Secretary ot _ In- . ternal Affairs, in various .sums, from. : time to time for the purchase of coin-. ' forts for sick and wounded soldiers. ■ abroad and returning to New Zealand; . and it is gratifying to learn from let- ' ters received that these comforts have been highly -appreciated by pur boys. A ; quarterfy statement of receiptsi and[ expenditure is published in the-three-Wel--1 lington daily newspapers, so that the public may see how the funds are beuig, . administered: by the executive, who are only too glad at all times visitors, and show them over the premises, and listen to any suggestion that, will do good ft) the canse. .
