Gas was used hv the Paris police in their effort to capture a deserter named Thouin, who was holding out in his flat at * Rue Andre del Sarto. Protected by a steel shield, a policeman bored a hole in the door, and inserted the gas tubs in it. As soon as ho realised the situation, Thouin shot himself through tho head, and the.door was then opened by his wife, who was already half suffocated. Thouin expired soon afterwards.
