' . !Cho success of the Hobson Street and Hobson Crescent day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop last Friday, ■ whon Jsso {inclusive of Miss Beere's danco recital) was realised for tho Red Cross, was duo to tho untiiing efforts of those who took the stalls. They were as follow:—Needlework, Mesdames Tilly, Larnach, and S. Harcourt; meat, Mrs, lan Duncan - ; pro. ducc, Mesdames M'Eldowney and Adams; calces, Mrs. Mills and Mi6.s Coatesi sweots, Mrs. Jacob Joseph and Miss Joseph; raffles, Mesdames D. Cook, Hayman, and Webster; tea, Mesdames Tweed, Biss, and Lawrio; parcels, Mrs. Walter Johnston. Surprise sweet packets wero sold in the streets, Mrs. Hiley and Mrs. Dyniock having a stall at tho Bank of New Zealand corner. Everything that could be desired had been 6ent into the room for sale, and tho display on the 6tallswas a very fine one. ,Tho needlework was charming, the silk cushions and bags with bunohes of raised velvet fruits and the shopping bags of Max with decorations of wool were novelties made by tho fingers of artistic women. On the raffle 6tall was an artiolo which should become an heirloom, the design and hand embroidery being .specially beautiful. The sweets made and given by Mrs. Jacob Joseph and Miss Joseph left nothing to be desired. Miss-Joseph is. taking Red Cross Christmas orders for her delicious chocolates and assorted sweets to bo delivered on Decomber 14, and her list is fast filling up. Boies from 15s. upwards may bo ordered. As the English and French sweets are not coming to us now, those will easily fill their.places. Tho meat and poultry from Mrs. Lan Duncan's farm at Waikanae found ready buyers. The produce stall was well stocked, and brawn and other savouries and delicious marmalade were Bold. The flowers, in charge of Miss Cooper and Miss Moss, wero beautiful, and as usual this stall added|a considerable sum to tho day's takings. Mrs. Hiley and Mrs. Dymook sold surprise sweets packets in the street, and sont in over J!SO. This effort was m every way a great, success. Morning and afternoon' tea added to the success of the day, and was splendidly organised. Mrs. Duthie mado a capable secretary. The winners of the raffles and competitions are advertised in this issue. Entertainment for Red Cross Fund. The Wellington Tramway Entertain' ore, always most ready and willing to give their best for any patriotic purpose, wero tho organisers of a very enjoyable entertainment whioh. was given on Saturday evening in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, in aid of Red Cross funds. On several othor occasions the company has given public performances of a similar nature, and each, one has been improved upon, so that Newtown residents are certain of a good ovening's entertainment whenever the Tramway men appear before theini The hall on. Saturday evening was. crowded to the doors, and' among the audience wero about twenty members of the Wellington South Nursing Division, with their superintendent, Mrs. Preston. Tho entertainment provided consisted of vocal and instrumental items, some of which were of a. humorous nature, an,d one or two others brought before the audience the object of the evening—that of helping the Red Cross funds of the Wellington South Nursing Division. Songs were sung by Messrs. G. Housteri, R. Ramsay, W; Vernon, and A. Smith. Tho "Red Cross Appeal" (a song) was gnng by Mr. H. Dunn and company, while the members of the Nursing Division made the round of tho room carrying flags, into which the audience poured their offerings, mostly pennies and three, penny bits. In this way £2 125., was collected, and an anonymous donor gave a pound, which brought tho .sum up t» ,£3 12s. Further contributions to the programme were made by Messrs. T. Woolcott, G. Emery, S. Fee, L. NortonTaylor, and R. Ramsay, with songs j mandolin and harp solos werei given by Messrs. Carruthers Brothers; a 6axophone solo by Mr. B. Tompkin, and a display of hypnotism by Professor Anderson. One of the principal items, howover, was the-. singing of an "A'nzao. Song," by- the company, while a tableau effect was displayed of a wounded soldier receiving succour from a Red Cross sister, Mrs. Morgan impersonating tho sister. This was excellently carried out,and pointed the moral of the evening. Mr; Arthur Bull ably carried out the duties of accompanist during the. even> ing. The stage manager was Mr. Liardot, assisted by Mr. Tompkin,, who was in charge of the scenery, and the company s secretary, was Mr. IVort. The business manager was Mr. H. Dunn. . ' On the day previous to the ontortainment a sale of flowers was held at Newtown, Mrs. Morgan being in charge of a stall at the corner of Rintoul Street. As a result ,£ls was taken by the salo of flowers, which with the entertainment given on Saturday evening should be of very material assistance to the dayot the Wellington South Nursing Division at the Woodward Street Red Cross Shop on September 28. Ohiro Home Concert. 4. concert was tendered.to tho old folk at the Ohiro Home on Thursday night by Mr. A. Boyd and party, and a . programme which was thoroughly by all was presented. Items were con. tributed by the following :-Mrs Potts, Miss. Petherick, and Messrs. Pickett, Shaddiek, Webster, Gibson, Hoole, Coles, Price, A. C. Thomson, Boyd, and PettyOfficer Val. Atkinson; accompanists, Mira Thawley and Mr. Dalton. Supper provided by the concert party was greatly appreciated by the old folk. Mrs Magill and Mrs. Fox, of Seatbun, will be in charge of tho Red Cross Shop, Woodward Street, on Wednesday, and will have a'good supply of flowers, cakes, sweets, etc. : Members of the Citizens' Service Leaguo willing to assist at the leagues stalls at "Paddy's Market' on September 28 and 29 are invited to attend a meeting to be,held in the Mayoress's room, Town Hall, on Wednesday. Mrs. Luke (Mayoress) is the convener of the; meeting. In Saturday's issue a marriago notice of Mr. H. L. Fox and Miss M. G..A. Bruce appeared. The bridegroom is. Red Cross Work in Auckland, !*}me interesting information, aa to the largo amount of Red Cross work done in Auckland during the past year is contained in the packing and shipping report presented at a mooting of tho joint committee held on Thursday. A total of 560 cases of c'lothmp, banaages, and other articles for use of. tho eick and wounded in hospitals in England, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and in local hospitals and for hospital ships, has boon dispatched. In addition to tho abovo deliveries, shipments of foodstuffs havo been dispatched as follow:—To Mesopotamia, 127 cases of preserved milk, flaxo, jams, etc.; to England, 2/6 cases of h"oney, butter, tonguc-i; meat extract, boiled sweets, etc., *Jeo 41 cases of home-made jam. It is worthy of note that the forwarding of the whole consignment of 1013 oases from the Auckland fted Cross depot to the respective destinations has been done absolutely free Of cost in tho way of freight, cartage and insurance. Tho report further states that a consignment of cake, being the first monthly instalment, is now: in courso of preparation, and will be dispatched almost immediately for use of the 6ick end wounded in-British hospitals.
Much interest will bo attached to tho display of presents to bo given at the rooital organised by Mrs. P. J. Nathan and Miss'Estolle Beere for' Saturday afternoon, September 2ft, now to be seen in the windows of the Bristol Piano Company's Tooms, Lambton Quay. Quite apart from the many attractions which are provided for this performance, the laudable object for which it is being organised, that of assisting Red Cross funds in connection with Thorn don Day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop, should secure a largo audionoe. ' " An excellent entertainment, in aid of the building fund of tho Wellington Free Kindergarten Association is scheduled to lake place on September-21-at Maranui Church Hall. Tho programme includes orchestral selections by Miss Grace Kon T nody's orchostra, dramatic sketch by Misses Nicholls and Lyon, and songs, recitations, etc., by leading Wellington amateurs. Tho cause merits support, and the programme, promises full' value to patrons. ~ The golden wedding was celebrated at Naseby last week of Mr. and Mrs. George Provan, who wero married at tho Hogburn on Septcmbor 13, 1867, by Mr. Nugent Wood, the Registrar of Marriages, and have lived in Nasoby over since, states the "Otago Daily Times." The witnesses to the ceremony, according to tho marriago certificate, wero Ocorgo Munro and Mary Burns, tho latter being the mother of the bride, whose maiden name wasUary Ann Rools. Of the issue of the marriago ten aro living—five sons and five daughters—and of the five sons four are on active 6ervico, and the fifth is eligible for 6ervico. A grandson is also at the front. Mr. and Mrs. Provan have clearly been valuable- citizens of tho Empire. The death took place in Masterton on Saturday, at the residence of Mr. Wood, Bannister Street, of Mi6s Elizabeth Bull. The deceased lady, who was the daughter of tho late Mr. and Mrs. E. Bull, of Dublin, had reached the age of 83 years, of which 37 were spent in tho Wairarapa. One of her nephews, Major Bull, V.C., was recently killed in Flanders, and his brother, Captain Bull, lost his life in India, through an accident, just before the present war broke out. Another nephew was killed in action during the South African War.
