JAR OF GELIGNITE

FOUND BEHIND BUSINESS PREMISES A MYSTERIOUS "PLANT" Shortly after 8 o'clock yesterday morning Mr. N. Perry, tobacconist, and outi of his assistants were clearing away some rubbish which had accumulated in. tho back yard' of Air. Perry's promises, at tho corner of Manners and C'oniMU Streets, when they made a startling; discovery. This was a rather large jar which was wrapped round and round with string. On investigation, the contents of this jar were found to ho gelignite (a very violent explosive)—enough to blow tho entire premises to splinters. Tho curious receptacle, which could have been there for two or threo days at the longest, was standing in. the corner of tho yard near the rate that opens on to Cornhill Street, winch is always kept locked. The natural conclusion arrived at is thai, whoever placed the jar of goligniio where it was found must have scaled tho high fence to do-it, and as tho scaling of '.ho fence would not bo tho simplest feat, it is argued that the depositor might have had an accomplice. Tho jar was loosely covered with brickbats, but there was no trace to l>e found of detonators or electrical connections that would lend to the belief that it was intended to explode tho gelignite on the spot. ' \ The explosive was apparently quite now, as the paper wrapping was clean and nnsoilcd. The particulars are known, to tho police, who arb making inquiries into tho matter.
