Nikau—No. 2 south Queen's Wharf. THE STRANDED OPOURI. The Uroymoulh "Star" states that Captain M'Phcrsou (deputy-harbourmaster at. Greymouth) says that both the bar and river were suitable for the entry of tho Opouri. as was borne out by the fact that tho Waimca, which entered ten minutes before, got in without tho least trouble. The Opouri came over the bar in a splendid position, and was well in tho river when tho steering near failed to act, and tho vessel drifted ashore. No instructions had been issued to utilise tho tug Wcßtland and attempt to refloat the Opouri. Questioned as to tho chanccs of refloating tho vessel, Captain M'l'horson deolinod to express any opinion. If the weather remained fine something might bo done, but otherwise the vessel would probably break up. Messrs. Kinscy and Co., LT3., Christ,church, agents for tho owners, will soil by public auction tho Opouri as sho now lies at Greymouth, the purchasers to accept all liabilities connected with tho removal of the wreck. Tho sale will be held on Wednesday next, September 12, starting at noon, at Groyniouth. WESTPORT HARBOUR RETURNS. The port of Westport returns for tho month of August, 1917, ar.o as follow:— Output of coal, 67,576.18 tons; export, 68,194.10 tons; export of timber, 226,817 sup. feet. During tho month 68 steamers and two sailers, representing 42,928 tons, entered the port, and 67 steamers and two sailers, representing 40,762 ton 6, left tho port. ■The total tonnage for tho month was 83,690 tons. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. ,T. E. Dugdalo, third engineer of tho 'Kaituna, has joined tho Koluri as second engineer. Captain Chudley lias returned to Wellington from the Soutlr Island. Captain Cameron has/ rejoined the Mararoa in place of Captain Ritchlo. < Mr. J. A. Patcrson has succeeded Mr. H. W. Budge as chief engineer of an overseas steamer. Mr. W. E. Ferguson has joined k Union Company's vessel as second engineer in place of Mr. TJ. W. Houghton. Mr. C. Vendoro has signed on tile Blenheim as mato, relieving Mr. ,T. Owen, who j has joined the Quia as maeter in plaeo of Captain Smith.
The* Baden Powell is duo to-morrow from Auckland, New Plymouth, and Wanganui. Tho vessel is advertised to sail at 5 p.m. to-morrow for Lytlellon. The Alexander, which is being cleaned aud painted on tho alii), is to come off on Tuesday morning, and sail at 5 p.m. for Nelson and West. Coast. The Oorinna, which is at, present undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, will probably resume her running in tho Dunedinway ports-Now Plymouth eervico some time this week. The scow Hazel Hcpton, with 80,000 feet of timber from Greymouth, arrived in tho stream at 5 p.m. yesterday, and will bo towed to Miramar this morning, Tho vessel, which is of 142 tons, left tho "Weßt Coast port ten days ago, and had to shelter for some time on account of unfavourable weather. The scow was sighted about a mile out from the Ileads, and tho tug ICarakn, towed her into port. Sho Is commanded by Captain M'Clennan. The Mapourika has been delayed by bad weathor, and did not leave Westport until 0.5 a.m. on Saturday for Nelson and Wellington. The vessel should arrive here at about 10 o'clock this morning. The Kamona, was held up by a bad bar at Greymouth on Saturday, and was unable to leave for Wellington. The collier Kakapo is to leave Lyttelton to-day For "Wellington and Greymouth. The Monowai iB due to-night from Auckland, and will leave to-morrow afternoon for Lyttelton and Dunedin. Four vessels with coal will be discharging here to-day. The vessels are the Ngahere, Komata, Mapourika, and another steamer.
