(By "War I'ilol," in the "Daily Mail."). ■i'lying nL the front is not, thank Heaven, exclusively composed of "Archie" (anti-aircraft sun) niul lighting. It has its own peculiar 'humour, too. There was a case reported recontly of a. pilot diving on a Hun staff-car and causing it to overturn. It just illustrates the point. . 1 have no doubt tho pilot chuckled deeply. Certainly it has been niy.part to chuckle over the way u column of troops can disperse to tho tuno of a nicely timed spray of bullets delivered from a pilot's machine gun over the top of a wood! One pilot enabled a, recent attack to lie made on a certain trench system without the aid of :i barrage, lit) crossed the lines and then descended behind the Hun trenches, doing extraordinary "stunts" and firing his gnu and his "Very" lights. All the' Huns manning those trenches turned round to watch or dodged for cover. Meanwhile tho attack wits made from our trenches and was entirely successful. To dive suddenly on the Him trendies, fire off a "drum" of ammunition, and swoop off again was quite iv regular "ganio" at ono time. There was one formation that had been patrolling at 10,000 ft. and looking for trouble—that being ite particular job—for several days •without any luck. Suddenly the leador dived, down, down, down, down, at 150 miles an hour. Tho otliejs had no idea, what was happening, but followed him' down. Then they saw him empty a, "drum" at tho Hun lines.from the height of 800 ft. and swerve olf and up again. The second pilot did tho same, and the others after him. The Hun trenches appeared to lose all life with a jerk. Then they began to wake up again with a vengeance. What was tho qther pilots' amazement to see the lender go hurtling down into it again. He had changed his "drum" and was just settiilff-out to "repeat tho movement"! The second man noticed he had snapped a wire in tho dive and concluded that mere play was "olf" for the moment. The others followed Ijie loader, and soon all, except tho one, were back again at their original height. .■Reconnaissance work used to give many opportunities for providing similar surprises. Nowadays, it is the fighting machines ihat gut the opportunities. The story of one pilot's "side-show" goes right back to the bird, his model. Hβ was compelled to descend in a fluid for behind the Hun lines. His observer jumped out and ran across the field to keep watch on that side. .Tuat as the pilot was ready to start off Hun soldiers came running up. They did not notice the observer. The pilot opened out. his engine and sped across the field alone. He "hopped" the intervenius hedge and settled down in the next field. As liis pursuers came running up he did the same nqaiu and led them on again. . . . When he had led them far enough he came back, picked up the observer, and got home! It was tho partridge with the "broken" wing over again. Tor yoara past our expertness and reliability have proved of value to business men, and never were they more helpful than now.
