TOWN PLANNING
Sir,—Mr. Hurst Seager's lecture last nitjht was enjoyable and instructive, and should do much to dispel an idea, which is too commonly held, that town-planners want something that is impractical. With referenco to. the lecturers statement that no New Zealand village is a thins of beauty, I would Tefer him to the township of. Cambridge. There, town-planning has ten.in vogue since 18S0. The Ftreets contain majestic specimens of English and New Zealand trees, prizes are given annually {or the best-kept cottage garden, the eommunitv of less than two thousand souls spends .£SOO per annum in upkeep of public gardens, resting and playinggrounds. There is hardly a house in the residential portion which does not bonst of a well-kept gal-don, ond walnut trees, liquid ambers,_ and scarlet oaks ndorn every street which is broad enough to gro wtli'em without their being a nuisance. The Domain is thtmost lieautiful in the Dominion, and the City Fathers have built a Concert exceeding in size that of the Capital City. The sanitation and liyijione is so well looked after that in twenty-seven yeaiß "not one case of tvphoid has originated in the borough. May I. suggest that a' few views of Cambridge would show what, has already been done, nnd what any mouerate-sized town could <16? —I am, etc., /MEBYYN WELLS. August 81.
