SALMON FISHING
THE NEW REGULATIONS In accordance with the -<]&sirc of the Minister of Marine, Vopresentativcs or the Canterbury and Otago Acclimatisation Societies met him yesterday m connection with the fishing of quiunat salmon. There were also present: Mr. h. V. Avson.. Chief Inspector of 1 lstienes; the HonMi. Heaton Rhodes, and Messrs. L. M. Isitt and V, P. Lee, M-P. s. It. is proposed that the salmon fis.iing season comnicnco on January 15, and be prolonged till April 15. This was agreed to bv the conference. ■. Considerable discussion took place os to the license' fee' which should be charged covering trout and salmon separately and together, the proposed regulations providing for a license fee of =£1 in each rase; or'a total of Jf.2 to cover both trout, and salmon from October 1 till \nril 15. The delegate; urged the Minister In do away with the special licence for salmon," as they considered that the reduced trout season would interfere with their revenue, wheieas the additional license fee. chargeable for takiug the salmon would reduce the number of sportsmen. Eventually the Minister stated that he would agree to hold up the matter for further consideration, hue he would-not commit hiinselt at present lo any concession. Regulations providing for salmon licences lo be issued- by the postmasters at Ciiristchurch, Dunedin, Oamaru, Tilnarii. tennika, and Ashburton, were agreed 10. . The Minister explained that the salmon business would be kept separate from the I rout business. Seeing that the Government had borne all the expense, they expected to derive, the revenue from Tho regulations also provide that no person shall catch more than 'six salmon in one dav. This was agreed to.
During the salmon spawning? season no nets of any kinrl will be allowed to bo n«etl inside the mouth of any river, stream, or tributary, ywhere salmon is known to exist, or inside the, mouth of any river which is being stocked by the Marine Department. The rivers which romc under this regulation are the Molynca.ux, Taie.ri, Kakannj. Wnitaki. Rangit.ita. Rakaia, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Wni'au. Wairau, and Hokitika. The regulations also give the Marine Department power to fish off the mouth of anv river for salmon for the purposo of placing the fish on the local market.
