SHIPPING INQUIRIES
Sir, —I wish to state that I had occasion to make inquiry of the agents of 6.5. Monowai yesterday as to what time that vessel would reach your port, as I was desirous of meeting a friend. On ringing up 'phone No. 771 at 1 p.m. I was informed that the vessel was due to arrive at 3 p.m. On goin<j to the wharf at that time I was told that sh« was not to arrive until 11 p.m. that evening. Being dubious as to whether this was oorrect, I again rang up No. 771 at 3 p.m., and was informed that the vessel wns due between/ 8 and 9 p.m. Taking this information,' as I thought, from a reliable quarter, I proceeded to the wharf at 8 p.m., saw the Monowai alongside, and was informed that she had arrived at 5 p.m. . - . Now, Mr, Editor, you can well imagine th? annoyance. caused through such a state of affaire, and I think in fairness I am entitled to a little explanation. Being a- stranger to your city, I rej?refe to say that the mode of conducting your inquiries re shipping is far from complimentary, and the time is evidently mgli for retrenchment somewhere. Apologising for talcing up so much of your valuable space.—l am, etc., R. H. LEWIS. August 2S, 1917.
