MAGNIFICENT STAND BY THE RUMANIANS
VON MACKENSEN CHECKED
STORY OF A TERRIFIC BATTLE
(Rec. August 30, 11.30 p.m.)
London, August 29. Describing the reconstituted Romanian Army's magnificent stand against von Mackenseri on August 19, tho "Times" correspondent on the Marasesti front says: "Captured orders revealed the fact that the Germans intended to strike a decisive blow by crossing the Sereth aud capturing Jassy and tho whole of Moldavia. Von Maekonsen attacked when the Rumanians were replacing tho Russian troops. The Kumanians, though outnumbered three to one, successfully resisted attempts to cross. Tho enemy's losses ' wore enormous. .The Twelfth Bavarians were annihilated. The Germans brought up twelve divisions in their endeavour to force the crossing, which, if it had been successful, would have pierced tho Rumanian front, endangering the whole of tho armies. The Rumanians heroically'sacrificed one division, and foiled the German plans., The Rumanians beat off numerous attacks during the following days, tliough whole regiments were decimated by the German guns, machine-guns, and gas, officers and soldiers dying at their positions, and 'rofusing to withdraw or surrender. The last big German effort resulted in a thrilling climax in the presence of King who fought with the soldiers. Tho Germans managed to pierce tho Rumanian entanglenients, but when tho last Rumanian reserves were thrown in they attacked with such violence that tho enemy fled, throwing away their rifles. The battlefield is still covered with unburied 'corpses, lying sis deep. The stench is unbearable a mile away. The enemy sinoe then has made no attempt to resume his offensive. The Rumanians hold tho left bank of tho Sereth and dominate the right—The "Times."
