Mrs. G. T.'Smith, of Palm Grove, Kewtown, lias received letters confirming the news of the death of her 'eon, Lieutenant Leonard Smith, on July 13, from wounds received at the front during the advance at Messines Eidge. Lientenant Smith received hie wounds on June 7 as he was returning across "No Man's' Land." Ho was within a few feet of shelter when, he fell soverely vounded, and he 'died in hospital on July 13. His officer commanding wrote that Lieutenant Smith had been nil day carrying out difficult work, at which he lad shown great bravery, and that Uie jiame had been 'mentioned for the Military Cross. At the outbreak of warj Lieutenant' Smith v;ent to Samoa with the advance body and later, as a n.c.0., paw service in arid on Gallipoli. In France he received a commission, and was appointed an observation officer. Lieutenant Smith was on the staff of the Wellington office of the A.M.P. Society before enlisting.
