ifessra. F. Armstrong and F. S. Easton, owners of Sleight of Hand and Master Strowan, the National winners, only stopped for one day's racing at Riccarton. • Owners and trainors are reminded that nominations for all. events except the Trial Stakes at the Dannovirke Spring Mepiing closo with the secretary, Mr. It. Takle. Dannevirke, on Saturday next, at 9 p.m. Strowan, tho siro of Master Strowan (wintier of the Grand National Steejilcchasc), and many other good winners, was destroyed by his owner, Mr. T. Andrew, about three months ago. The old chap was getting up in years and Mr. Andrew 'thought it advisable to qnd his days. Mi*. F. S. Easton, owner of Master Strowan, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase, headed the list of winning owners at the Grand National Meeting, his chequc amounting to £1050. H. Burt had one of his foet badly bruised when Merry Lad fell with him in tho Beaufort Steeplechase on Saturday, but this was the most serious injury sustained by any of the riders at the Grand National Meeting. F. Ellis was tho most successful* rider at the Grand National Meeting, piloting three wiuners; J. R. ICaan'scored twice, as did Stanley Reid and W. Bell, while A. M'Donaid, R. M'Seveney, J. Olsen, 0. Price, F. Flynn, H. M'Sweeney, and A. Reed each had one winning ride. The craclt trotter Admiral "Wood was pffered for sale by auction at Christchurch on Monday, but was passed in at lOOOgns. Rewi Poto's two displays at Riccarton discounted his reputation as a hurdler. Ou Saturday he jumped wildly at nearly every obstacle, and finally almost *camo down by taking of! too soon at the second to last hurdle. This quite eettled his chances, end altogether his jumping left a lot to be desired. It was intended to take the son of Maniapoto to Australia for the A.J.CJ. Spring Meeting, but this idea has ; now been practically abandoned. After competing in the Beaufort Steeplechase on Saturday The Brewer was purchased by Mr. Lan Duncan, who intends using the veteran son of Blue Ruin as a hack and hunter. Though he was never in the firßt flight of cross-country horses through want of pace, few better jumpers thau The Brewer havo ever crossed the Riccarton fences.
"With all duo respect to other clubs, I think the New Brighton Trotting Club have put up a, record." said Jlr. B. M'Kerina at. Thursday's reunion of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association. "They have transformed the rough grass traclt into whdt it now is. The fact that on that track a horSe put up the time of'4min. 233-ssee. for two miles, practically a world's record, speaks volumes for the club's progress. Although not too affluent, the club/are going to raise the value of the New Brighton Derby from 250 «>vs. to 500 sovs., ■ and the committee hope that before long they will be able to include in tlieir programme a handicap race of the value of about 1000 6ovs."
Applications are invited for the position of handicapper to the Auckland Racing Club. Particulars may be found in the advertisement.
