M.P., MINISTER OF DEFENCE, NEW ZEALAND, ActingPrime Minister of the Dominion fiom August 24, 1918, to June 24, 1917.— i "Sir,—We the undersigned residents in the provincial district of Canterbury, desire to oppress our high appreciation of your services as Acting- ' Prime Minister and head of the Na-" tional Government of New Zealand during the absence in England of the Prime Minister (the Right Honourable W. F. Massey, 3?. C.), and the Minister of Finance (the Eight Honourable Sir Joseph Ward, Bt, P.G., K C.M.G.) on an important mission Oil State. . "While acting in tliat capacity, you were called upon to face problems lit connection with the great war requiring judgment and statesmanship tor their solution, and to carry a heavyburden of responsibility. "Some of vb may differ in matters of domestic politics, but wo are united in our desire to pay a tribute to the ardent devotion to tho Empire and the courage and singleness of purpose with which you have discharzed the duties of your Mgh office. "We desire, further, to congratulate you on the distinction recently conferred upon you by Hi 3 Majesty tho King, and to express our sincero hope that you may be spared many years to enjoy your honours, and-to do further service to the State."
