ATHLETIC PARK
, CALCULATIONS UPSET BY THE AVAR. The effort* of the Wellington Rugby Union to secure Athletic Park has been an uphill battle, and tho following brief statement by a member of the union is interesting just now, when an attempt is being made to save the ground for Rugby "When in 1913, .on the expiration of tho existing leaso, a new leaso had (o be arranged, the union was in financial difficulties. However, after much negotiation a now leaso was taken early in 1914 on a much-improved basis, namely, a rental of JM37 per year. In normal times the Park would have quite a payable prouositjon on the.-e terms,.but the outbreak of war upset calculations. Owing to the absence of first-class matches the takings have fallen to zero, and an appeal to the public has become accessary in order to preserve' the Park for Athletic purposes. In addition to defraying the expenditure, in connection with tho Park itself, the Wellington Union has in the past looked to the gate takings at tho Park to pay tho rents of other grounds, and to keep' up tho standard of plav by encouraging tho younger players."
