OR MORE USEFUL GOODS? A suggestion that the space occupied oil steamers by American motor-ears might be put to better use was made in the House by Mr. Cr. Witty, who asked the Government whether, owing to ships coming from America and carrying largo numbers of motor-cars and other unnecessary goods, and at tho same timo men arc being discharged from tho railway workshops and other industries owing to the shortage of materials, they will see that materials that are required by tho Railway Department and other necessary goods are carried on ships trading to our ports, instead of carrying motor-cars?
The Rt. Hon. TV. F. Massey (Prime Minister) replied:—Motor vehicles have become essential for the'carrying on of 6omo of the industries of tho Dominion. The duty oollectcd on motor-cars last year was .£US,OOO. Motor-cars come mostly from America and Canada, whilo railway material comes chiefly from Britain. The Railway Department, through tho High Commissioner, is doing its beat to obtain tho material which is urgently required.
