SAVE THE CALVES
SUGGESTION BY ME. W. 11. HELD. A.proposal that the Government should assist in the preservation of calves by importing calf-foods was rnado to the Government recently by Mr. AV. H. Field. Mr. I'ield asked the Minister of Commerce whether, in .view of the importance of rearing all calves in the Dominion, he will consider the 'question of the importation of cod-liver oil, soya beans, and other valuable calf-foods which are at present practically unobtainable, and ■which,'if available at reasonable prices, ■would 'havo very considerable effect in the'direction" of inducing dairy farmers to rear nil their, calves, instead of following the practice of killing them at truth, Khich so many farmers have, unfortunately, been doing" for some years past. Mr; Massey replied: While other calffoods 6iich as linseed, oatmeal, crushed j oats, and certain proprietary preparations are available it does not "appear advisable for the Government to undortako the importation of cod-liver oil, soya beans, etc. Cod-liver oil is a fahiv good cream substitute! hut. owing to its frequently sickening calves through heing stale or of poor quality, it cannot be generally recommended.
