BOOKMAKERS' OPERATIONS
A. series of questions regarding bookmakers operating in Wellington were asked in.tho House yesterday by Mr. K. A. Wright. The questions go on tho Order Paper, and they will be answered next -week. . ' ~, Mr. Wright asked the AttorneyGeneral i whether ho would take immediate steps to restrict tho illegal operations of bookmakers plying their calling m Wellington. . Was the Minister aware that a number of bookmaking firms were carrying on -their business without any interference from the police? Would tho Minister take stops to cancel the following telephone connections held bv bookmakers:—Arthur Law, 2772; Scott and Martindale, 1910; David Ross, 57? .... AVould the Minister institute inquiries with a view to discovering the number of bookmakers or their employees operating on a large scale in certain city hotels? Had he been advised that a huge volume of' business was transacted by bookmakers in this manner? In viow of tho approaching race meeting at Christchurch, would the Minis, ter direct that specinl supervision bo exercised with the object of limiting tho present colossal operations of the bookmakers in Wellington, and would ho also take steps to prohibit any further correspondence being delivered ever tho posjal counter to R. N. Scott, Wellington, which name was a disguise for Scott and Martindale, bookmakers, Sussex Chambers?
