CARTERTON NOTES

At a. meeting , of the Carterton Library Committee it was to ask the city librarian, Wellington, to select twelye best war books and order them to bo forwarded; to order 20 books of fiction at once, Miss Moore, Mrs. Cole, and Mr. Wise to make the selection; to Bend a circular to subscribers asking them to suggest books and endeavour to get subscribers to the library. In rogard to country socials, the secretary was instructed {9 lako steps to interest the various districts, as it was intended to proceed at once with furnishing a ladies' waiting room. The following .were appointed a furnishing committee: Mrs. Cole, Miss Moore, Mrs. Steele, and Mr. Wise. Seven new subscribers were elected.

Mr. Kidd, schoolmaster at Longbusli, has received -a similar appointment at Bidoford, ond the vacancy' Jit Longbueh has been filled by the appointment of Mrs. Green, of Eketahmia. Arrangements arc being made at Carlerton for holding a Children's Navy League ball. In the past the expenses in connection with the Wednesday night entertainment of soldiers under the auspices of the, Carteilnn Citizens' and Settlers' Enter-' taininent Committee have been met with voluntary donations. It has now been decided to make a levy of Is. per member in order to pay the expenses which ocour each week. Mr. Downes, eonior clerk, at tho Carterton railway station, who was recently thrown from a motor-car through tho car skidding in a rut, while he was proceeding home to his tea on a recent Saturday evening, has sufficiently recovered to enable him to leave the private hospital. It will bo several weeks, however, before hi! will be able to regain the use of the injured arm. The Canvassing Committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society hud a very successful visit to Wellington iast week.
