ALLEGED PURCHASE OF BRITISH TITLES
DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS. (Rec. August 8, 7.15 p.m.) London, August 7. Speaking iu the House of Lords, the Earl of Selborne said that there existed a widespread belief that honours were sometimes granted in return fov largo payments of money. He enggested that when honours were conferred on subjects other than members of Koyal Houses, uaval and military officers, and the Civil •Services, a. public statement should, be mado giving the reasons; also that the Prime Minister should make a declaration that no payment, direct or indirect, was associated with a particular honour. Earl'Curan, in reply, said that hereditary honours had been widely diffused in our generation, and their democratisatiou was one of their best safeguards in our public life. Cases o£ alleged purchase of honours were an infinitesimal, proportion. Moreover, honours "were given far less for party services than was formerly the case. -The Government was prepared to consider an extension; of the system in regard to publishing, the reasons for granting honours. The- Marquia of Salisbury denied that the evil was exaggerated. The- nations conscience had beeu awakened, and the Government should find a remedy.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
